The Story Behind Mojo

Where It All Began

My understanding of human potential began with my son, James.

In 1996, when James was just nine months old, he suffered a brain injury during a heart operation. We were told that he wasn’t expected to walk or talk.

That prognosis changed the direction of our lives.

At the time, I was working in the corporate world, building a career that I’d worked hard for. But James needed me, so I decided to leave that career behind.

What followed was a journey of learning, determination, and discovering just how much more might be possible than we first imagined.

I became fascinated by the brain, how it learns, how it adapts, and how abilities can develop when we create the right conditions.

James taught me something that has stayed with me ever since.

What someone can do today doesn’t necessarily tell us what they may become capable of tomorrow.

Today, James walks, talks, and is a father himself. His journey continues to remind me why we should never be too quick to place limits on another person’s potential.

What I Discovered

That experience changed how I saw people.

I began to notice how often we judge someone’s abilities by what we can see in a particular moment, without fully understanding what might be happening beneath the surface.

Over the years, I’ve worked with people facing very different challenges. Some were rebuilding their confidence. Others were trying to overcome experiences that had affected how they saw themselves or what

they believed they could achieve.

Again and again, I saw that the person standing in front of me was often capable of more than their current circumstances suggested.

I also learned that progress rarely comes from simply telling someone to try harder.

It comes from understanding the individual, recognising what’s getting in their way, and helping them develop the resources to move forward.

That became the foundation of my coaching philosophy.

From Personal Experience to Performance Coaching

For more than 25 years, I’ve worked with people to help them recognise and develop abilities that aren’t always immediately visible.

As my work developed into performance coaching, particularly within equestrian sport, I began seeing a familiar pattern.

A rider could be technically capable, dedicated to their training, and performing beautifully at home.

Then they’d enter the competition arena, and something would change.

The timing wasn’t quite there. Their focus shifted. Confidence disappeared. Decisions that seemed natural in training suddenly became difficult.

And sometimes, despite everyone doing their best to help, the same difficulties kept appearing.

What interested me wasn’t simply the mistake or the competition result.

It was understanding what had changed for that rider, and why the abilities they’d already developed weren’t always available when they needed them.

I could also see the frustration this created for coaches.

They knew their riders had the ability. They’d invested time, knowledge, and care into developing it. Yet the usual technical corrections didn’t always solve what was happening under pressure.

That was the gap I wanted to help close.

Why I Created Mojo Performance Systems

Mojo Performance Systems grew from the belief that great technical coaching deserves an equally thoughtful approach to competition performance.

Riding coaches already do an extraordinary amount to develop their riders. My aim isn’t to replace that expertise.

It’s to add another layer of understanding.

I want coaches to recognise what pressure changes in a rider, understand the individual behind the performance, and have practical ways to help riders access the abilities they’ve worked so hard to develop.

That’s why we’re building the Mojo Performance Operating System™.

It brings together the understanding, skills, and structured approach needed to support riders before, during, and after competition.

And it’s why the Mojo Coach Evolution™ matters to me, too.

I want coaches to have opportunities to develop their own expertise, grow their businesses, and make a lasting difference to the riders who trust them.

Because for me, this has always been about more than a single performance or competition result.

It’s about recognising possibility, helping people grow, and giving them the opportunity to discover what they’re truly capable of.

I believe potential is often hidden by pressure, not limited by ability.

How Strong Is Your Competition Performance Coaching System?

You know how to develop your riders’ technical skills. But how prepared is your coaching approach for the moments when pressure changes everything?

The Mojo Performance Scorecard™ helps you explore the strengths of your current approach and identify where you could make an even greater difference to your riders’ competition performance.
